In a corporate culture that depends on collaboration and teamwork, the FIRO-B is an excellent tool to position your team for success. Examine how your team members relate to work relationships and how that influences team effectiveness.

About the Firo-B

For more than 40 years the Fundamental Interpersonal Relations Orientation-Behavior (FIRO-B) assessment has helped people around the world understand how their need for inclusion, control and affection can shape their interactions with others at work. Easy to complete, this 15-minute tool is ideal for team development, one-on-one coaching, communication and leadership development. The FIRO-B is versatile - it can be used as a stand-alone or in conjunction with the MBTI to create a comprehensive view of personal style for use in improving working relationships and individual effectiveness.

The FIRO-B provides information about three fundamental dimensions of interpersonal needs:

  1. Inclusion – recognition, participation, and how you relate to groups
  2. Control – influence, leadership and decision making
  3. Affection – closeness, openness, and how you relate to others

The FIRO-B instrument increases your understanding of how you tend to behave toward others and how you want them to behave towards you.

The FIRO-B helps you to get a measurement of such vital information as:

  • Team role potential
  • Satisfaction/dissatisfaction with teams
  • Interpersonal orientation – working alone vs. working with others
  • Leadership strengths of individual members
  • Team chemistry – getting the right match
  • Working together through conflict

Practical, Applicable, Energetic, Fun
At Quixote, we know how important it is for any new training knowledge to be practical and applicable. That's why we put such great emphasis on immediate and realistic application. Participants leave with a plan in place for employing their new skills in the coming week and beyond. We also know that people respond best to presentations that are energetic and interactive and fun. There is always laughter in these sessions. And the unique methodologies we employ definitely help - we've used the modalities of chocolate and even wine pairing to explore the preferences of the different types.

Lasting Impact
Participants walk away from our sessions with practical tools that can be immediately applied to their individual work situations, as well as a vision of the powerful productivity possible in a team that recognizes and leverages all its members' strengths.

We customize key components of the FIRO-B training to ensure that you get the right material to the right people at the right time, maximizing the return on your investment. We take into account your unique team situation and your desired outcomes.

If your team has taken the MBTI
The FIRO-B is an excellent complement to the MBTI and the two tools are widely used together. Since FIRO-B uses completely different scales from MBTI, and was not designed to measure inborn "types", the two together give a more complete picture of a team's strengths and effectiveness. A special tool combining the FIRO-B and MBTI is available:

  • The Leadership Report Using FIRO-B and MBTI

We also recommend:

  • Individual coaching to maximize the effectiveness of your training investment
  • Fun team building events all of which are designed to explore the FIRO-B in an enjoyable, interactive setting
