In 1957, Bruce Springsteen and his mother watched Elvis Presley on the Ed Sullivan show. Bruce says, “I looked at her and I said, ‘I wanna be just . . . like . . . that’.” He was eight years old.
Approximately 30 years later Laura Herbert saw Elvis perform Jailhouse Rock on TV while she was making a Pee Wee Herman robot. She was probably around eight years old too. Now she performs as Lady Elvis.
What you admire is a clue to your passion. It’s especially helpful to notice what blew you away when you were really young? Your passion is embedded there. I loved reading, listening to music, being out in the woods with my dogs, swimming, skating, being quiet by myself, and playing games like tag and soccer with friends at school. I loved recess.
35 years later, it’s pretty much a great day if words, music, nature, exercise, fun are somehow involved.
Who or what made you say “I want to be just like that” when you were eight? And how can the passion in that desire move your day closer to what you’ve always loved?

I love it! It’s amazing how the things we love when we’re young really carry over to adulthood. I was just reflecting on my “personas” this morning (i.e., Lady Elvis among them) and why it is appealing to me to do that. Who knew I had so much in common with the Boss!
